Year 6's Starship phone appeal

The year 6’s in room 7 are doing the Starship Hospital phone appeal for the their air ambulance for people in need or badly injured. So far we have 144 phones in the box. Our goal is to reach 155 phones to win a Sony Handycam recorder. The boys in this project are Felix , Flynn , Dallas and Joe.The girls in this project are Shania, Mia-rose, Sophie and Georgia. If we reach 915 phones we win a interactive white board. The phones get sent over to Auckland and get remanufactured in countries such as Hong Kong and China so they can be re-used. We have been lucky that so many people, some even from outside our school, have donated phones.

Winter sports Tournment 2010

On the 21st of September the St Josephs A Netball team went up to Christchurch for the winter sports tournment zones. We left at 10:00am, and got there at about 11:00am. Our first game we had was a bye, then we got warmed up and played our next game. We played Marion first and we won. Then we played Villa and we won against them. Then we played Rangi Ruru and we beat them. Then we played against Sumner and we won, and we won all the rest of our games.We got into the finals and played Borough A and we bet them and it was a tough game! We went over and got our trophy and we got some photos taken. :) by Emily and Jess

under 13 basketball nationals!

On the 4th of October I went to the Basketball Nationals in Christchurch for the under 13 girls team! We went to the premierships in Dunedin in July. We made the finals and were playing Nelson. In the end we won the game so that meant we were going to Nationals and also we had won GOLD and we were the best under 13 girls team in the South Island. On the 4th we headed off to the nationals! On the first day we went to the opening ceremony at the Que11 stadium in christchurch. Our first game we played we won against Counties Manakau. When we had won the semi finals we were really excited and nervous for the game the next day. The next morning was the finals and our whole team was so nervous for the 2.30pm game against North Harbour. The first quarter was hard and we were losing 15-8 the 2nd quarter was very close. The hooter went and we had won 78-81 it was the best feelings we had ever had!!! . At the prize giving we got presented with a GOLD medal and a trophy. Three of our team members got into the tornament team. And Sophie in our team got most valuble player in the girls divison for the under 13 girls. In the end we were very proud and also we had made Mid Canterbury history!

As part of our whole school Art Week , each class studied the work of one famous artist . Our class studied the work of Calrice Cliff who was born in 1899 and died in 1972. Clarice Cliff was unique. She chose to interpret art deco in her medium -- ceramics -- with vivid colors and strong lines unlike any seen before. For a very few brief years she was encouraged to try anything -- no matter how extreme -- and try anything she did. She said in 1930 that "color seems to radiate happiness and the spirit of modern life" and somehow that is what she created with her pottery -- joy and a sense of limitless possibility.

On Thursday Josh , Sam , Isaac and Josh competed in the 2010 Aoraki Maths competition. When we got there the nerves were building while looking at the the other teams. The president of Aoraki Maths called out for the runners to battle like gladiators for the best table.Then the runners went up to the judges from Timaru girls high and handed in our school names then we got our first question. We had 30 minute to answer as many question as we could. The man called out on your marks, get set, go it felt like we were at the Olympic games .30 minutes had past quickly as we placed 5th and out of 62 and got 14 question right.Which drawing with Ashburton Borough B and Mt Hutt College A. It was tough but rewarding in the sense that we came 5th.It was a truly exciting catching up with a few old mates.

On the 5th of August 2010 the senior syndicate participated in the winter tournament. We entered in Hockey, Netball, Rugby and Soccer. The Hockey team came third. They won 4 games, lost 2, then won the final. Rugby was not so fortunate. Both teams came last. Soccer was last as well. Netball was a big sucsess for the year 7/8 netball A team as they won the tournament.

Overall we preformed really well as we tried our hardest and we can't wait till next year.

On Monday the 2nd of August the year 6's went to the national bank for Financial Literacy.They told us not to get a credit card when we are older because you will be in debt.We got a tour around the bank and we got to see the safe with the money in it and we also got to see the money as well.At the end we got a pencil case and a money tin and then we left to come back to school.

Japanese visit

On the 29th July our school had a visit from some Japanese students.
They came when we were having lunch so we talked to them and they took pictures of us.
When lunch was finished we all gathered around the seats and watched the Japanese students do a traditional dance and sang their school song.Then we sang Kia Waiata to them.
After they were finished their performance groups of five of them came into each of the classrooms.
In our classroom the Japanese students talked to us about a tradition where people sprinkle beans on their doorsteps and around their houses to drive away evil.
Even though it wasn't the date that the ceremony was happening,one of the Japanese students put a dragon mask on and we threw foam beans instead of real ones that would be roasted.
Then one of the visitors took out another mask, Josh and Brett tried it on and we laughed at them.
We then sang Peace Like A River to them in Maori because we were learning it for Maori Language Week.
They then took out some special origami paper with flower patterns on them, they came in shades of green, pink and reddy orange. They didn't have enough pieces of paper so we got out some coloured paper of our own.
Luckily I got some of the Japanese paper in green.
We all made origami birds.
It was really hard but fun to make the birds.
We all had a photo with the Japanese students and then we said goodbye to them and they left.
It was a really fun day making origami and watching the Japanese students.

On Thursday the 29th of July, St Joseph's school had a Lip Sync Competition.This was held at the Sinclair centre. The heats were held at the Sinclair Centre on Monday the 25th of July. Several lucky contestants made it through to the finals. The lucky winners for the senior section were Milly, Sian, Annie and Emma and for the Juniors was Irene. We all enjoyed watching everyone do their Lip Sync and hopefully it will go really well next time.

South Island Cross Country :)

On the 23rd June, Fenella, Sam H ,Matthew B,Josh S, Matthew R and Kate D went to South Island cross country. At 8.30 we met each other at school and all went up to Halswell Quarry in Christchurch. When we got there we watched Kate run her race. She did really well to get 27th out of over 100 9 year old girls running as the track was very muddy and wet!.Next Fenella, Sam and Josh had to warm up for their races.As Sam and Josh lined up at the start line they said they felt really nervous. Once Sam ,Josh and Fenella had finished their race,Matthew B and Matthew R started their race. Matthew B was in the lead for a while and then another boy past him. In the end Matthew got 2nd and did really well.When we finished we went to McDonalds for lunch!.

Indoor Bowls

On the 28th of June the St Joesph's Indoor Bowls team went to the indoor bowls final. There were 5 schools there. They were Tinwald, Rakaia, Wokanui, Netherby and St Joesph's. First off Matthew and I played Rakaia.We lost 8-6. Then we played Netherby we won 6-3. Over all our school came 4th as we got 16 wins. One school bet us by half a win. I loved playing indoor bowls,I hope to be in it again next year.

Year 7 Tekapo Skate and Soak Trip

Sadly the trip has had to be postponed due to the likelihood of snow on the roads today. However the good news is that the trip is now on next Thursday, 1st July. All arrangements remain the same and the phone tree will be used if it needs to be cancelled.

Room 7's Musem Trip

Last Friday our class went to Ashburton Art Gallery/Musem. Our topic is on water so we went there to learn about Canterbury's water system. We found out lots of facts and information about water as each student had a choice to choose atopic from Didymo, water pollution, dairy farming, use of water and drought. The lady who showed us around the Museum was Jean and she showed us a model of where our water goes to after we have used it. She also showed us how dairy farmer's water their paddocks in a case of a drought which was really interesting. Over all we had an awesome time and would love to go again sometime soon!

Leadership Course

On Tuesday the first of June Aleisha ,Sam M , Madison and Sam's dad went to Christchurch to the National Young Leaders Day.To start the day off the presenters threw round beach balls and filmed us all. The first speaker was Nick Tuatasi. He told us"Be careful of your thoughts because they become words ,Be careful of your words because they actions Be careful of you actions because they become habits, Be careful of your habits because they become your character Be careful of your character because that becomes your destiny".
Dallas Seymour said "that your friends don't always want you to succeed".Rob Harley said "Never give up". Matt Gibb and Jason Gunn both said that you can get there but your character keeps you there. Aleisha's highlight of the day was when Dallas Seymour spoke and said that your friends don't always want you to succeed. Sam's highlight of the day was getting the chance to listen to all the speakers but the one that was the most inspiring was Nick Tuatasi. Madison's highlight was being picked to go on this leadership course.

On Wednesday the 2nd June Veronica, Hannah-Mae and I went to Timaru for the Xtra spelling quizco. There were two teams. We were the year 5/6 team. There was also a year 7/8 team. The children in that team were Millie.Y, Josh.G and Aleisha.M. We left at 3:15pm for Timaru. The year 7/8 team went at 6:30pm. We had a fun journey. Once we had reached Timaru we walked into the Timaru Boys High school hall. Once inside we sat down at table No. l6. It also read our name. A teacher from Timaru expained the rules, we had to give our team jobs . I was the runner .Veronica was the writer and Hannah-Mae was the worker outer. Once the Quiz had started we were working well as a team. There were 10 rounds. My favourite was words from other countries. At the end we had been placed 7th equal which was very good out of the 40 teams that participated. Next we got to go to Macdonald's for tea, it was delicious. After our yummy tea we sadly had to go home. By this time it was about 8:00pm .Since my mum was driving we had to drop Hannah-Mae and Veronica off . Over all I loved the experience and we all hope to go next year. Also I really enjoyed representing my school.

Drama with Mrs Davies

Every Thursday Mrs Davies comes to teach us drama. We have actors, directors, camera people, props, people, editors and narrators. They are doing a great job. There are two movies, one is The 3 Little Pigs and their Mama, and the other is Goldi, the Bears and the Police. We are using Movie Maker to produce these. We have a lot of fun doing drama and we still have a lot to learn.
We still like to have Mrs Rush as our teacher too.

This week was Catholic Schools' Day and it was awesome. We celebrated with the rest of Catholic Schools in New Zealand. Our school began the day with prayers with our parents and then parents were invited to stay and join us in our mornings activities. After this parents stayed for morning tea. We had a liturgy and then released 60 helium balloons . At lunchtime we got a lemonade ice block each and then we had a family group quizco. It was a day to remember as it only comes round every three years.
